Intercultural Center of Iowa Derecho Relief Fund Content
This relief fund was created to support both the short and long-term needs of the African, Refugee, and Immigrant Community of Cedar Rapids impacted by Derecho. On August 10th of 2020, Iowa experienced strong wind storms known as Derecho. Our Cedar Rapids community, especially Africans, took a huge hit from this storm. Their apartments were completely damaged and the roofs of the apartments fell on them, leaving the residents homeless. This community lost everything they owned including damage to their cars, making transportation difficult. They also lost all of their personal belongings, furniture, and other household items. The sizable impact of Derecho on this community requires a sizable and measured response in supporting them. We have been on the ground taking needs assessments, helping relocate families to temporary housing, supplying food, and other necessary services. Going forward, we will need support in getting these folks permanent housing, supplying household items, including furniture, assisting with transportation services, and as well as mental health services. All of this work will require hiring staff to help us execute these tasks, finding and paying for storage facilities and funds to assist in offering the varied services listed above and any unforeseeable needs.
